The Teaching Program Initiative

Shifting the focus from exhaustion to education

The Teaching Program Initiative (TPI) emphasizes a scientific, methodical approach to tennis training, by focusing on educating players and parents about the science behind tennis teaching.  Our goal is to challenge outdated practices and myths to improve player development more efficiently. The TPI aligns the physical aspect of tennis with scientific principles that lead to more efficient play, better performance, and a more fulfilling learning experience. By shifting the focus from exhaustion to education, the (TPI) can significantly improve player development. Key Elements of the Teaching Program Initiative include: An Educational Approach, The Six Works of Tennis, Deconstructing Myths and, Training Pros, Players and Parents.

1. An Educational Approach:

The focus is not on making players sweat through exhaustion but on providing high-quality scientifically validated  information that leads to faster, more effective learning.

2. The Six Works of Tennis:

Head Work

Racket Work

Racket Work

Performance psychology, mental toughness and strategy/tactics, are all crucial for players to perform under pressure and make smart tactical decisions during matches. Check out our sports psychology resources here.

Racket Work

Racket Work

Racket Work

Proper swing mechanics ensure efficiency, and minimize unnecessary movements that complicate shots. The goal is a swing with the fewest moving parts.

Footwork

Racket Work

Footwork

Footwork includes how players move to and adjust to the ball as well as proper recovery. Efficient footwork is essential for reaching the ball in optimal position and maintaining balance during the stroke.

Eye Work

Fitness Work

Footwork

Visual focus and tracking the ball are key to reducing head movement during the shot. A player’s head must remain still while hitting, a technique that can be difficult but is critical for precision/execution.

Breath Work

Fitness Work

Fitness Work

Proper breathing is essential in any sport to control: heart rate, focus, carbon dioxide elimination, endurance and relaxation.  In tennis it also helps with timing of the hit, racket speed, accuracy and recovery between points.

Fitness Work

Fitness is critical for tennis, but is not our primary focus. Our major emphasis is on stroke production / strategy / tactics and performance psychology. For tournament level players, fitness should also be addressed off-court

3. Deconstructing Myths:

  • One of the core goals of our program is to break down common misconceptions that are widespread in the tennis teaching world. Many tennis programs focus on making players tired through exhaustive drills, equating fatigue with learning. However, our approach focuses on the idea that learning and understanding are the true measures of success. Most have heard that practice makes perfect.  If it were only that easy.  Perfect practice makes perfect. Many players put the needed time into improving their game but with insufficient information.
  • Physical law (the laws of physics) and court dimensions determine how a tennis ball is struck. Physical Law determines how a tennis ball reacts when struck, not subjective opinions or dated teaching techniques. The dimensions of the court dictate how a player swings the racket to achieve a desired result.  This scientific approach helps ensure players learn the most effective and efficient way to strike the ball. We use educational videos or articles that provide evidence and explanations of why certain common practices are ineffective or even counterproductive.

Deconstructing Tennis Myths

4. Training Pros, Players and Parents:

  • The TPI goes to great lengths in training teaching professionals to focus on providing quality information based on science rather than a coach’s unique theory or opinion.
  • Parents are encouraged to evaluate programs based on the quality of instruction and player development, not solely how exhausted their child is after practice. Players and parents understand that exhaustion is not an indicator of a quality program and sometimes this means slowing instruction down for the student to learn faster.
